Mission
Our mission is to " Empower Your Child’s Uniqueness! "
As a parent of a child with AD/HD, you may find comfort that you are not alone facing the
explosion of information aimed at AD/HD.
Is AD/HD a biological disorder that dooms children to a life of underachievement and misery? Is it merely an excuse, manufactured to cover up the failures of the parents and irresponsible
adults? These are not simple questions. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that how we view
the nature of AD/HD has profound implications for how we perceive our selves and developing a
meaningful program of change.
If you are a parent of a child with AD/HD, you have probably struggled with feelings of
hopelessness about motivating your child to change.
The demands of a child with AD/HD can be daunting and expose flaws in a family structure.
On another view, it can also provide a foundation for building an even stronger family structure.
How you view the situation dramatically impacts the outcome...
How SmartCoach sees your AD/HD child.
Your child is different - different in a way that our culture has not yet learned to appreciate. The many educators and healthcare professionals you have encountered are not necessarily wrong. They just do not see the difference as a gift or strength. Instead, they see it as a disorder to be corrected. The empirical model of AD/HD, conducted on clinical populations who experience the most problems, defined by the quality and quantity of symptoms and behaviors that can be quantified, irrefutably points to the fact that AD/HD is a biological condition.
AD/HD, viewed from this perspective, comes out as "pathology" and becomes defined essentially in terms of symptoms and impairments. It is no wonder then why so many AD/HD children carry the label of being “disabled” and “sick.” This negative labeling crushes a child’s self-esteem and self-reliance. Labels and perceptions can be inspiring or crushing to a child. Ask any child who has been called “smart” or “dumb.”
We at SmartCoach acknowledge the fact that AD/HD can cause difficulties in life; yet, we feel there are many positive qualities that
are associated with this complex biological phenomenon: Increased creativity, spontaneity, energy, keen ability to see insincerity in people,
emotional warmth, to name a few. These traits cannot be empirically measured, but that does not mean these positive and wonderful traits are not
real or unproven. For this reason, we believe that your child has a unique gift of AD/HD. AD/HD is not a Ritalin deficiency disease.
Replace that negative label with positive one: AD/HD is a gift! SmartCoach believes CHANGE is possible!
Many AD/HD episodes can be prevented. The starting point in prevention requires a paradigm shift in how you see and understand your child. AD/HD is not a medical disease. By telling a child that he is sick, you are encouraging a “why try” or my AD/HD made me do it” attitude. We believe AD/HD is merely a set of behaviors that your child does. By reframing AD/HD as a gift, a child’s motivation for making changes can increase dramatically by being aware of the significant resources he possesses. The goal of reclaiming your child’s gifts is worth it.
If you agree with our assessment, join SmartCoach to reclaim and empower your child’s uniqueness!
